2023 Great Green Wall Day : Over 10m trees planted in 11 Frontline states -- DG

The National Agency of Great Green Wall has disclosed that the agency has so far planted over 10million trees across the 11 Frontline states since it inception in the country.
Speaking on Thursday to mark the 2023 celebration of National Great Green Wall Day in Gusau,Zamfara state capital,the National Director General of the agency Dr Yusuf Maina Bukar disclosed that the agency has also plan to plant more trees.
The Director General who was represented by the Head of administration of the agency Nasiru Samaila revealed that the 11 Frontline states includes Zamfara, Sokoto, Katsina,Kano,Borno,Jigawa, Bauchi,Yobe,Adamawa,kebbi and Gombe states.
He maintained that the essence is to create green wall and bring among Frontline states alone the corridor to plant trees to protect desertification from Sahara.
He stressed that the aimed of the celebration is to bring all stake holders together that includes Governors, traditional rulers, Ministry of environment and Schools to form a habit of planting trees in their environment.
"Everyone knows we a facing a lot of challenges, because of climate change due to disertification and land degradation,the important of planting a tree can never be over emphasize due to its contribution to the country".
The DG maintained that the agency under his administration has introduced alot of initiatives for the National great green wall for it sustainability since it inception in the country.
"The agency has planted over 10m trees across the Frontline states since it inception in 2003 to the time it was named agency by the act of Parliament.".
The Director General who was represented by the Head of administration of the agency Nasiru Samaila revealed that transformations such like a design that would trap water and some nutrients for the survival of tree to a long period of time were introduced.
He further disclosed that part of the transformation brought by the Director General was also introduction of water box that can retain water and sustain it for a long period of time between three to four months.
According to him,training and retraining with alot of transformations agenda's were brought to the agency within shortest possible time by the Director General of the national Great Green Wall.
During the celebration in the state,trees were planted at Ibrahim Gusau Model primary school in Gusau,JB Yakubu secretariat, Government House and emir of Gusau palace in the state.
In their separate remarks, permanent secretary ministry of environment Mohammed Abubakar,Head mistress of the Ibrahim Gusau special Model primary school,Hajiya Amina A.Usman both assures to sustain and protect the planted trees in their domain.
