Zamfara: Quelea birds destroys 250 hectares farmlands in Bakalori.

In Zamfara State, Farmers at the Bakalori Irrigation Scheme has cried over ravaging birds,saying over 250 hectares of farmland were destroyed by Quelea birds in the area.
According to the Chairman Bakalori Water Users Association, Malam Yakubu Yahaya,the invasion of birds has threatened food security in the state and country atlarge.
"Farmers had exhausted all available techniques to curtail the situation, but the birds have continued to ravage the farmlands.
"We call on governments at all levels to urgently come to our rescue over the ravaging birds that destroying our farmlands,this is a threat to food security, the birds had so far damaged over 250 hectares of farmland.
He lamented that, the ugly incident has become an annual disaster, but the current situation requires immediate attention with emergency response from government to save the remaining hectares.
"About 1,500 farmers were affected by the disaster,this is as a major setback to the state’s economy and the nation at large.
Meanwhile, the Acting Director Bird Control, Zamfara State Ministry of Agriculture, Alhaji Mahe Bala said they had received the report and had arranged to forward the matter to the Honorable Minister of Agriculture for urgent attention.
